What is Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)?
IPV is characterized as any form of abuse or violence inflicted by a current or former partner in an intimate relationship. This includes current and past relationships, same-sex relationships, common-law partners, and married couples with or without children
IPV includes various forms of abuse and can be physical, sexual, emotional or psychological, financial, spiritual or cultural. Regardless of its form, IPV is a growing issue that impacts households and communities countrywide.

Peel Regional Police have recognized Intimate Partner Violence as an immediate issue and have developed a specialized unit to help in efforts to combat this community problem. However, there remains an issue where several cases of intimate partner violence go unreported contributing to the ‘dark figure’ of IPV crime statistics.
